Race Weekend

This weekend is the Pasadena Half-Marathon, and I am running this race as the second of three races for the Conquer LA Challenge. As this weekend is quickly approaching my own doubts are coming into full force. I wonder if any of my runner friends get this way. You know, doubt your ability to run the race (despite running multiple half-marathons in the past and this exact one last year). Thinking that if you finish it will be the worst time on the race than any other race, and having this looming dread about the course.

Maybe it is just me, but this upcoming race weekend is a little much for me. I mean I know that I have not been training as well as I have in the past but I have been eating well, trying to make sure I don’t get my body out of whack. I have maintained my Crossfit schedule of 5 days a week and I have added in some running. As if my mind did not have enough to worry about today I also got a wonderful notification from the LA Marathon which is the last of the 3 races for the Conquer LA challenge.

This was a nice reminder that I need to get my training on point because the full marathon is definitely going to take a lot out of me. This weekend I will be posting some of my pre-race routines on my instagram @fitnessgalnovice. What are some things you do before your races?

Community, Consistency and Crossfit

The alarm goes off at 4am (I know 4 happens in both the am and the pm, shocker) and it is time to fuel up for the day. I make my shake and take a bit of time and then get ready to head to the box for 5am class.  The box (crossfit gym) is where I start my mornings, keep myself sane and ensure that I am consistent in self-care.  I know, some of you are thinking that 5:00 should only happen once a day as well and that being when you are getting off work. Consistency is key, so there I am Monday through Friday 5am ready for whatever crazy WOD (workout of the day) we have. I would be lying if I told you there were not mornings I saw the WOD and did not consider staying in my nice warm bed…but I would never hear the end of it from my 5am community. Someone would at minimum text me and give me a hard time, and then I would also hear about it the next morning.

The reason crossfit has grown so much such its beginnings  is because in crossfit you become family, you gain community. With that you have this wonderful thing that is accountability. There are times where I don’t want to lift heavy weights, are push harder because I’m tired, or I just don’t want to but then, there are the friends (classmates) and trainers that push you to try harder, lift heavier (within you actual capabilities) and will encourage you to push through. I LOVE my box, so much so that when it was time for my lease on my apartment to come up and I was considering my options, I knew that I needed to be close to my box because they are a priority for me. People talk and joke about how crossfitters talk about crossfit all the time, and working out and WODs and movements most people have never heard of.  The reason they do this is because they love what they are doing, they love their family and they can’t wrap it around the head that you don’t understand or want to join them.

Now I go Monday through Friday, so you might think I lift super heavy weights and am super fast, but I am not. I am not the strongest in the class by any stretch of the imagination and those gosh darn pull-ups still allude me after years of off and on crossfit (on for 2.5years off and on for 1 year and on for 6ish months). I am often the slowest, but that is ok, because I am getting faster, and stronger and I am confident that this year I am going to conquer those pull-ups.  Why? Because I am consistent in going and putting it out there. I have amazing friends and trainers that are supportive and encouraging and will push me to do more and be better and will not let me settle.

Community and accountability take fitness from just trying to work out to a lifestyle of growth and being healthy. What are you doing to be healthy? What does your fitness look like? Let’s chat! I would LOVE to tell you more about why I LOVE my box!!

Fitness Goals 2018

Every year about this time I start to see a flood of people making New Years Resolutions. We are constantly setting these crazy resolutions that are are dead set on keeping them for a few weeks right? The gym is full of people, which is annoying for those who are there for more than a couple week and we will put up with the lack of equipment (treadmill for me) for a bit. For me I will spend the first few weeks tying to run outside more, to avoid the lack of treadmill availability at night.

I am setting goals for the year and making a plan to meet my goal. I am not setting a resolution because those are typically not met. For me, I am making a goal to lose 50 pounds, because last year I gained quite a bit of weight due to constant changes and stress levels. I let myself stress eat and now am working to get back to where I need to be. I am also setting a goal to run my Ragnar in April with a sub 10 minute mile.  I believe that my running goal is going to help with my weightloss goal. If I am running more often and faster, I am going to be burning more calories, which if I am eating healthy then I will lose more weight.

Are you setting fitness goals for 2018? Are you making a resolutions for the new year? Lets Chat!

Fitness Friday

Here we are at the end of the year and I am realizing that I have neglected this blog for the last year. This coming year I am making a point to make some fitness related goals for the year and I am going to post about my progress here.

Looking ahead, I have a race coming up January 21. I am running the Pasadena Half Marathon as part of the Conquer LA challenge. I don’t know about you but my training has definitely been what I wanted it to be and now I need to focus in my training. I have a half marathon in January and February and a full marathon in March, so the next few months will be focused in on preparing for the LA marathon which is in March. `

How are you training? Are you running any races? What are you goals for the upcoming year? I will be posting more next Friday.

Medal Monday

Yesterday I had the pleasure of running the inaugural pasadena half marathon as part of the Conquer LA challenge. Ok, so while it is cool that my medal says that I am a legacy runner, the race itself was anything but a pleasure. For those that follow the weather, California has had a crazy storm system just dumping rain on us. Yes, thats right it was raining for the entire race. We started the race 20 minutes late, in the cold rain. The rain started off not as bad, a nice drizzle, however as I am a slow runner, by the time I finished the rain was pouring down.

So first off, the weather was awful, and by the end of the race I was drenched despite my rain jacket that is supposed to be water resistant, that only lasted for so long. Also I am pretty sure my watch died 2x during the race because it was that wet through my jacket.

Now if the weather was not enough, my training has not been quite what I wanted. I know you would think that the beginning of the year I would be all over this training stuff right? Except I have been on a fast through my church which has limited my ability to train at the level I wanted.

Then, because of the weather there were multiple wardrobe changes, you know jacket off, jacket on, long sleeve under jacket off. There were some tech messages that kept coming through from my work with people that forgot I was not going to be there and that someone else was handling my responsibilities.

One amazing thing was that for the first time in awhile, despite the cold and humid weather which are typical triggers for my asthma, and I did not need to use my inhaler. My time was not my best, or my worst. It was close to be best, and had I not had the issues along the way it probably would have been much closer to my best time.

So next month I run another half, and I am running the Divas half marathon. In March I am running the last of my Conquer LA challenge and doing the LA Marathon. So you will hear about those races coming up an day training for them.

Have you had a race that you did not do as good as possible? What changes in training did you make?

The Struggle is Real

The last few weeks, ok well maybe the last couple months we particularly hard for me with regards to my wellness journey. I have been in a season on constant change, and am still in this season. My schedule was a bit on the extra crazy side with 4 hours of my day spent commuting. I have moved recently to be closer one of my jobs and am starting to get back into the rhythms I know are best for me. I made sure when I moved that I started at a new Crossfit  box as soon as possible. I started going in, and doing the workouts but since it has been so long since I was consistently attending my old Crossfit (the last couple months I was going 1x a week), my abilities have been dramatically reduced.  Last week I was doing a workout with squats which at one time was my weakest area and I had made fairly strong and it was like I was starting all over again. I could not get the depth, my knees kept tracking in and I was struggling with weight I knew I had been able to do before. I found myself so frustrated and irritated with myself because if I had prioritized my health and continued working out this would not be the issue. I expressed my frustration to the trainer and he just reminded me to not get frustrated and that it would come back over time and I would get stronger.

So I  began to think on what that would mean. What would I need to do to make the improvements that I want to see for myself. So I am making a plan of improvement. Since moving January 2, I have attended Crossfit 4 times, 2 times the first week and 2 times last week. I know that to make the improvements I want to see I need to be more consistent and push harder and go more often. This week my goal is to attend 3 days. Next week my goal is 4 days. Now I know that 4 days is going to be tough because my schedule is still a little crazy and I work 2 jobs. But I am going to make the priority to go and push myself 4 days.

Now if only I could say that all I did was Crossfit I would be pretty crazy to most but I also run. I have a half marathon this weekend and my training is less than ideal. I will still be running because it is part of the conquer LA series and I have already started. I have another half in a month, so starting next week I will begin to train for that as well while also really training for the LA Marathon in March. I have goals for myself for this year on my running times and I know that I am going to have to push myself hard to get where I want to be. So I will be writing more of this journey towards optimal health and  wellness.

Wellness Wednesday: Routines

Hello Again! Welcome to Wellness Wednesday.

Today’s topic is one that I am learning a lot about, with a crazy and now inconsistent schedule I am realizing the importance of routine  in my life. What do I mean by this? Routine is having specific things that you do on a regular basis. Routine makes taking care of your own health better and easier. I find now that I am not in a routine it is much harder  to get my workout in and eating at regular times. Now its been a couple weeks and I am struggling to find a routine I can stick too. Ever feel like you have fallen out of your routine and can’t seem to get back to it?

So today, I am deciding that I am going to focus on getting back to routine. What that might look like is unclear but I am going to dedicate some time to making a routine for my life that I can stick to. I am sure that it is going to be hard and that I am going to have days where I miss the routine but I am going to keep trying.

So how is your routine? Do you have one? What does it look like? What are you going to change to your routine? Lets dialogue.

Wellness Wednesday and the story of stress

Stress, its that one thing that consumes each one of us. We stress over big a small things, life changing events and things that in the big picture might not matter at all.  Recently I have found myself stressing over things that I know better than to stress over. So this week I thought why not talk about some ways to reduce stress.

First thing is first, we need to identify what is stressing us out? Ask yourself what is really the issue, is it the first thing you think if or is there more to the story? What is the priority of the issue? Is this really a life change issue? Take a minute to reality check yourself, what will this matter is 1 month, 1 year, 5 years from now?

Secondly, is there something you can do about the issue? Is this your issue or have you taken on something that you have no control over? If you have no control over the issue or it is not our issue, here is a phrase I use to help me to get the issue out of my head “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” This mantra as it is helps you to stop stressing over something that is not your problem.

Lastly, if this is an issue that needs attention. What can you do about the situation. Make a plan about what you can do to solve the issue. Remember that you are only able to do what you can do. Do what you can do and then let yourself breath. Go do something with friends, go for a walk d something you enjoy. When you do this stress will decrease.

So let me know what you are doing to reduce your stress!

Wellness Wednesday: How well are you taking care of yourself

Here we are for another Wellness Wednesday posting and I am back to self-care. Why would I be back on this topic? Simple it is incredible important and something that is often overlooked or ignored. So it is time to look back at the last couple weeks and ask yourself a few questions.

  1. Am I getting enough sleep?
  2. Am I eating with good nutrition?
  3. Am I eating a lot of junk?
  4. What is my current stress level?
  5. Am I exercising?
  6. Am I happy?

This week the post is not a long one, but when you answer these questions be honest with yourself. If you find yourself not where you want to be what can you change to help move you in the right direction? I know that my exercise routine had been a mess and I had not been doing what I know I needed to do so I decided to work on that. This week I am focusing on getting more runs in and training for my upcoming half marathon. I will probably not get in all the miles that my training app wants me to this week but I am going to try and get miles in everyday so that I can get closer to where I want to be.  Are you eating too much junk? Look at the circumstances around it and make the changes you need to fix that. These will probably start with small steps but it will get better. So let me know what is working for you and lets chat about how to help each other become more aware of self-care and become better at it.

Wellness Wednesday: Planning

So you want to be healthier, you want to eat better but then when it is time to leave the house you are in a hurry and decide you will have to get lunch out that day. How do people eat healthy when they are in a hurry and busy. One word, planning!

Planning is a little hard to start but once you start it becomes second nature. First thing in planning is deciding what you you want to eat during the week and what you need to eat.  Then set aside time to plan your meals and then make your food for the week.

I use a crockpot and prepare my meals for the week and sometimes i make some extra and I put it in the freezer.

Are you looking for recipes? What can I do to help you plan your meals? Let me know!
