Community

Two years ago I moved to an area an hour and half away from where I had been living due to work, I could no longer handle the commute. One of the things I worried the most about was finding a new Crossfit box. I am not one that likes change and as an introvert new groups of people make me a little extra nervous. So I did what everyone does and I went to my good friend google and did some research. My research did not give me enough information so I asked a co-worker that I knew CrossFits if he had any recommendations of a good box to join. He told me he did and that he knew the one of the owners of a box in my city and that he was good people. So I contacted him and signed up.

That first day I walked in, 2 years ago (this is posting a day after the exact 2 year date) my nerves were high. I was not sure what to expect, the only box I had ever been to was the one I had been a member of back home. I had a million thoughts going through my mind, would the people be nice, would the coaches be good, will the workouts suck, am I making a mistake. It had been awhile since I had been at CrossFit consistently with my commute and crazy work schedule and I knew that I had lost some of the skill I had worked so hard to gain.

I walked in and was greeted by the owner that was friends with my co-worker with a smile on his face. He was inviting and welcoming so I started to go. I was attending a few times a week, not super consistent because my work schedule was still crazy with working midnights a couple nights a week and a day job for 40 hours a week. Eventually other things changed and shifted and I started being consistent with M-F and 5am.

One thing I learned was how much I valued my community. For those who have never been to Crossfit, community is a big part of Crossfit. I decided that I did not want to move when my lease was up because I did not want to find a new Crossfit community. I only really know that other 5am people, and a couple 6am and a handful of coaches but those are my people.

Now there are some of these people I go get coffee with, or run with or go to Disneyland with and I have decided that I am going to make an effort to build more relationships with the people in others classes. The reason I have been able to push myself in both fitness and outside fitness has been because of these people. Who is your community? Are there people that will encourage you on your journey? Rest

Typically I don’t get sick, I might have a slight brush with a cough or something but not really enough for me to consider seeing a doctor, but last week I get hit hard by a cold. I know a cold sounds ridiculous to even say that a cold hit me hard but it did. Enough so that I saw a doctor (side note, if you live in an area where Heal is they are amazing, its urgent care but they come to you). I thought maybe I had an infection or something, but no it was a cold. I am not one to get fevers, I can’t remember before this the last time I felt feverish but this cold, hit me like a ton of bricks, and I was so feverish (thats what was the concerning thing for me).

The hardest thing I was told by the doctor was there rest. Anyone that knows me knows that rest is the easiest thing to do, in fact I am not very good at it all. However, I have been doing some pretty hard training, and hitting some back to back training days without letting my body rest. So, Thursday morning, I did the unthinkable, I didn’t go work out. I knew I needed to go into work and be able to function the rest of the week. I did go in Friday morning and things were better.

Today, on my running schedule I am supposed to do a long run (12 miles), but I have been coughing a lot this morning, so I decided that I would go running later and do a shorter run to see how my body feels. Moral of the story, lets remember to rest!

Must be faster…..

Last weekend I ran the Pasadena Half Marathon and I didn’t die! I realized in looking at the stats that in the last year I added 15min to my half-marathon time. I don’t know about you but for me it was very discouraging to see. However, since last years race I have had many changes and am just now getting my footing back in eating healthy and consistently working out. My running, that is just now getting back to being consistent. Sometimes I forget that the process of getting back to where we were seems like it takes longer to get back.

So now, here we are getting back to basics. This month I have been getting my eating on track. I have lost weight, I am beginning to see my clothes fitting looser than before and running does not seem as bad. I am not where I want to be but I will keep pushing to be faster. It’s a good thing I have another half-Marathon in a little over a week. My goal is to faster than the Pasadena Half Marathon.

Community, Consistency and Crossfit

The alarm goes off at 4am (I know 4 happens in both the am and the pm, shocker) and it is time to fuel up for the day. I make my shake and take a bit of time and then get ready to head to the box for 5am class.  The box (crossfit gym) is where I start my mornings, keep myself sane and ensure that I am consistent in self-care.  I know, some of you are thinking that 5:00 should only happen once a day as well and that being when you are getting off work. Consistency is key, so there I am Monday through Friday 5am ready for whatever crazy WOD (workout of the day) we have. I would be lying if I told you there were not mornings I saw the WOD and did not consider staying in my nice warm bed…but I would never hear the end of it from my 5am community. Someone would at minimum text me and give me a hard time, and then I would also hear about it the next morning.

The reason crossfit has grown so much such its beginnings  is because in crossfit you become family, you gain community. With that you have this wonderful thing that is accountability. There are times where I don’t want to lift heavy weights, are push harder because I’m tired, or I just don’t want to but then, there are the friends (classmates) and trainers that push you to try harder, lift heavier (within you actual capabilities) and will encourage you to push through. I LOVE my box, so much so that when it was time for my lease on my apartment to come up and I was considering my options, I knew that I needed to be close to my box because they are a priority for me. People talk and joke about how crossfitters talk about crossfit all the time, and working out and WODs and movements most people have never heard of.  The reason they do this is because they love what they are doing, they love their family and they can’t wrap it around the head that you don’t understand or want to join them.

Now I go Monday through Friday, so you might think I lift super heavy weights and am super fast, but I am not. I am not the strongest in the class by any stretch of the imagination and those gosh darn pull-ups still allude me after years of off and on crossfit (on for 2.5years off and on for 1 year and on for 6ish months). I am often the slowest, but that is ok, because I am getting faster, and stronger and I am confident that this year I am going to conquer those pull-ups.  Why? Because I am consistent in going and putting it out there. I have amazing friends and trainers that are supportive and encouraging and will push me to do more and be better and will not let me settle.

Fitness Friday

Here we are at the end of the year and I am realizing that I have neglected this blog for the last year. This coming year I am making a point to make some fitness related goals for the year and I am going to post about my progress here.

Looking ahead, I have a race coming up January 21. I am running the Pasadena Half Marathon as part of the Conquer LA challenge. I don’t know about you but my training has definitely been what I wanted it to be and now I need to focus in my training. I have a half marathon in January and February and a full marathon in March, so the next few months will be focused in on preparing for the LA marathon which is in March. `

Wellness Wednesday Week 2

Hello All,

Its Wellness Wednesday once again and we are going o continue our discussion on making the most of your wellness journey. So last week week I left you with the challenge to figure out where you are at in your wellness journey and where you are at in the process of making changes. This week the topic is how to start to make changes and how to make goals for those changes.

We make fitness goals and wellness goals that are sometimes a little unreasonable. What do I mean by this? Here is an example, I will lose 20 pounds this month. This is not reasonable and is likely setting yourself up for failure. Why? Healthy weight loss is typically 1-2 pounds a week. We also make goals that are not very specific, such as I am going to drink more water.

When we set goals an easy way to remember how to make a SMART goal is to use the letters of SMART.

SPECIFIC- When setting a goal, you should be specific, how many pounds, how much more water, what calorie goal, you get the point,

MEASUREABLE- This goes with specific goals often, because in being specific we are putting a form of measurement into the goal right?

ATTAINABLE- Can you actually do this? Increase from 1 bottle of water a day to 6 bottles a day, while 6 bottles of water is a good goal, do you think you make achieve that goal or should you start smaller first?

REALISTIC- Is this a goal you can realistically achieve or are you more likely to fail horribly at it?

TIMLEY- Is there a time associated with your goal? By when? When will you check and see if you have achieved this goal and are ready to start a new one.

So, now that we have an idea of what it means to have SMART goal, lets practice some. Goal 1 is to lose weight, so for a weightless goal lets say I will lose 10 pounds by September 1st. Is this specific? Yes! Measurable? Yes! Attainable? Yes! Realistic? Yes! Timely? Yes! This may be a SMART goal for me, but for someone else this might be too much, maybe they would change the number to 5 pounds.  Goal 2 is to increase water intake. I will add 1 bottle of water to what I am currently drinking for the next week. Is this specific? Yes! Measurable? Yes! Attainable? Yes! Realistic? Yes! Timely? Yes!

Wellness Wednesday

Hello All!

I am here, back to blogging about health, wellness and fitness. One thing that I will be starting on this blog will Wellness Wednesday. On Wednesdays, I will post  about wellness specific information. So to start off the first post we are going to start at the beginning.

Where are you at in your wellness journey?

What do I mean by this? Well are you on a wellness journey, have you began to think about where you want to be with your wellness? If the answer is no, then what brought you here?

In psychology we learn about the stages of change. There is the pre-contemplative stage of change, this is the part before you realize you need a change. Maybe some other tag brought you here but now you have some interest peaked. Then people move to the contemplative stage of change. This is where you are beginning to think that there may be a problem with something going on in your life. Maybe your pants are starting to get a little tighter than you like or you are getting more tired quicker than you used to. Maybe you are just not happy with where you are so you are thinking about making a change. After this comes planning, maybe you are in this stage of change. Are you starting to make plans to make changes, making a plan to exercise more, setting up goals that you want to achieve are some ways that we begin to plan. Then comes the action stage where you actually start doing things differently. This is when maybe you are eating differently, maybe you have made a new workout routine. Then is maintenance when you are continuing on the journey and are able to without needing additional supports and these changes have become habits and lifestyle changes

So the first step in your wellness journey it to figure out where you are at on this journey and determine if you are ready to start one if you are not already on a journey.  Next week we will discuss the way to get going on a wellness journey. Let me know on the comments your thoughts!

Big Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow I try something i have never done. I will be running my first half marathon. Right now I am sitting her nervous about all of the things that can possibly go wrong. I could run really slow and not finish….I could trip, I could do some random thing….

At the same time I am excited because this will be the longest event I have done and I have not been running even a year. I remember when I decided that I wanted to try this running thing out. I remember not being about to run for more than a few meters before I needed to walk.

I think my breakthrough in my running came from doing crossfit. Anyone that has done Crossfit knows that the group camaraderie in a workout makes it work. I remember the first time I had an easy 400 meter run and I thought there is nothing easy about that! I am sure many people can relate. Now 5 months later when i go for a 2nd workout and there is a 400 meter run it actually feels good. Somedays I am waiting to get back to the box to do my second workout which is endurance based. I never would have thought that I would be excited to go workout a second time.

So for those reading my blog, what are your fitness goals?Do you have a specific goal in mind for what you want to do? I had a goal to run a half marathon, what is my new goal? Long Time

It was been a long time since I have posted a blog. Over the last few months my journey has taken down a path the a few years ago I would not have even imagined. A few years ago, I could not run for any length of time, heck a year ago I could only run for a few seconds before I got too tired. My friend Angelisa can definitely attest to that. Thanksgiving day I did my first 5k, I walked most of it but I finished it. My time for that first 5k was just shy of any hour. This past July I did 5k and my time was under 40 minutes. However this summer I have also done a 10k in May and a 15k in July and in 1 week I am doing my very first half marathon. My goal next week is to finish the half with 15 minute mile average. I wold have never thought a year ago that I would be excited to run or that I would want to just go for a run on a saturday or sunday morning.

Other changes

WellI have been doing crossfit for over 5 months now. I have become that person that goes almost everyday during the week and 2x some of those days. In fact, if I could I would go 2x a day everyday and I would go monday through friday but…. I am learning that you also need to let your body rest. I can tell I am getting stronger and more endurance. Who would have ever thought that I would ever be the first one in after an easy 400m run?

Also my diet has changed. I stopped doing weight watchers because it was not working for me. Im going to clarify that Weight Watchers is a great program but it stopped working for me because my workout routine changed and became much more intense. I do a mostly clean eating thing, not completely clean just mostly. I still eat crap occasionally but I eat a pretty consistent diet of the same things. I am learning to listen to my body and to my cravings to determine if something needs to change.

So hopefully I will get back to a more stable posting routine and post my on my thoughts about being healthy and fitness.

Change in Climate

I realized today that it has been a long time since my last blog. Perhaps because right now I should be working on my dissertation but I am not.  I moved from Michigan several months ago back to California.  Big big difference in the climate. I have found that since moving here, it is much easier to be active.  It is interesting how much of a difference the weather can make on how active we are.  I have found several new things that I really love.  I love riding my bike, I did this a lot for a bit but have changed my workout and I am focusing more on training in the evenings for the Disneyland Half-Marathon.  Also since moving how I did this crazy thing and joined Crossfit. This  fitness novice has definitley had her butt kicked by joining Crossfit…. the workouts are crazy intense.  However now that I have been doing this more than 1 month consistently (at least 4 days a week) I am finding that I can feel myself getting stronger.  I am able to do things that I could not do when I started. Now I am adding a second workout focused on training for the half marathon.  It is crazy though how much not directly training for running has already helped my speed.  My 5k pace has dropped about 5 miles a minute.  I am down to about 13 min mile doing a 5k from about 20min mile. I am running another 5k in a couple of weeks and we will see what happens then.   Anyone else have this experience?
