Perspective

Two weekends ago I ran the LA Marathon and somewhere between mile 16-20 I started to slow down, and my stomach which had been hurting on and off for some time was very irritated and my knee was also starting to hurt a bit (reasons behind both, may be explained later). As I was slowing down and getting more tired I realized that I was not going to reach the hard goal I had set. Now mind you originally my goal was to finish is less than 6 hours. However due to how my training had been looking, some wise friends told me that a 5:30 would be possible. As I was running, I realized that the I was not going to hit the 5:30 time. My stomach was starting to hurt off and on and my knees were irritated and I was slowing down. I found myself getting frustrated and irritated. Maybe you know exactly what I mean by that. I started to get in my mind about how bad it was and so on and so forth. 

Then a thought made its way in through all the noise, remember last year… remember how bad your time was then? Immediately my mindset shifted. I reminded myself that last year my time was far worse than this year and that I was still on track to finish significantly better. I also remembered how bad I felt along the way the year prior. Then I remembered that I was still on track for a significant time improvement from 4ish months ago when I did NYC. 

Funny thing when my perspective shifted, running went back to being easier. My thoughts went back to more positive thoughts and I continued to make my game plan. I then started back into reminding myself of my mantras while running “I can do hard things…. I do hard things…. I can do all things” and set the next goal for during the race. Smaller milestones were things like in just over a 5k you have a friend in one of the cheer zones, then it’s 5k and the downhill starts and then it’s about a 5k and you finish.

Running a marathon is far more in your mind than on your feet. Your feet with keep you moving, even if it’s very slow but if your mind tells you that you can’t do it your feet will stop moving.

Rest

Typically I don’t get sick, I might have a slight brush with a cough or something but not really enough for me to consider seeing a doctor, but last week I get hit hard by a cold. I know a cold sounds ridiculous to even say that a cold hit me hard but it did. Enough so that I saw a doctor (side note, if you live in an area where Heal is they are amazing, its urgent care but they come to you). I thought maybe I had an infection or something, but no it was a cold. I am not one to get fevers, I can’t remember before this the last time I felt feverish but this cold, hit me like a ton of bricks, and I was so feverish (thats what was the concerning thing for me).

The hardest thing I was told by the doctor was there rest. Anyone that knows me knows that rest is the easiest thing to do, in fact I am not very good at it all. However, I have been doing some pretty hard training, and hitting some back to back training days without letting my body rest. So, Thursday morning, I did the unthinkable, I didn’t go work out. I knew I needed to go into work and be able to function the rest of the week. I did go in Friday morning and things were better.

Today, on my running schedule I am supposed to do a long run (12 miles), but I have been coughing a lot this morning, so I decided that I would go running later and do a shorter run to see how my body feels. Moral of the story, lets remember to rest!

You Are Stronger Than You Think

I don’t know about you, but I am notorious for doubting myself when it comes to lifting weights.   I think too much for my own good and will do less weight because I think that I won’t be able to lift it. Anyone else in my boat? I like to play it safe, but when you do Crossfit, that does not always work. This week, once again I was reminded that I am stronger than I think I am.

This week, we were doing back squats, which recently I was told I can go much heavier and should be going heavier on. In the process I knew I was going to pass my record weight before finishing building to a heavy set. So on my last set, I went and added 2.5 pounds to each side, you know staying safe, it would still be above what I had previously done so I was happy with that. However, as you can only imagine, that did not fly well, and the trainer saw that I had only put on 2 1/2s, he took them off and put on 5s. Then said he would spot me and did. The funny thing was, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had imagined in my mind. I was able to do it, and thinking back, next time I can probably do heavier.

I have been working recently on my mind when I work out. I tell myself when I walk up to the barbell, that I can lift it, I have done it before, I am strong enough…. I then focus and give it all I have. Some days I am able to do more than I imagined, some days I hit the physical limit. But you have to push the limit to know where it is right? Not that I am the best at it, its still a learning curve, but it is the start of a journey. What are you telling yourself when you are working out or trying something hard?  Lets chat!

Medal Monday

Yesterday I had the pleasure of running the inaugural pasadena half marathon as part of the Conquer LA challenge. Ok, so while it is cool that my medal says that I am a legacy runner, the race itself was anything but a pleasure. For those that follow the weather, California has had a crazy storm system just dumping rain on us. Yes, thats right it was raining for the entire race. We started the race 20 minutes late, in the cold rain. The rain started off not as bad, a nice drizzle, however as I am a slow runner, by the time I finished the rain was pouring down.

So first off, the weather was awful, and by the end of the race I was drenched despite my rain jacket that is supposed to be water resistant, that only lasted for so long. Also I am pretty sure my watch died 2x during the race because it was that wet through my jacket.

Now if the weather was not enough, my training has not been quite what I wanted. I know you would think that the beginning of the year I would be all over this training stuff right? Except I have been on a fast through my church which has limited my ability to train at the level I wanted.

Then, because of the weather there were multiple wardrobe changes, you know jacket off, jacket on, long sleeve under jacket off. There were some tech messages that kept coming through from my work with people that forgot I was not going to be there and that someone else was handling my responsibilities.

One amazing thing was that for the first time in awhile, despite the cold and humid weather which are typical triggers for my asthma, and I did not need to use my inhaler. My time was not my best, or my worst. It was close to be best, and had I not had the issues along the way it probably would have been much closer to my best time.

So next month I run another half, and I am running the Divas half marathon. In March I am running the last of my Conquer LA challenge and doing the LA Marathon. So you will hear about those races coming up an day training for them.

Wellness Wednesday: Routines

Hello Again! Welcome to Wellness Wednesday.

Today’s topic is one that I am learning a lot about, with a crazy and now inconsistent schedule I am realizing the importance of routine  in my life. What do I mean by this? Routine is having specific things that you do on a regular basis. Routine makes taking care of your own health better and easier. I find now that I am not in a routine it is much harder  to get my workout in and eating at regular times. Now its been a couple weeks and I am struggling to find a routine I can stick too. Ever feel like you have fallen out of your routine and can’t seem to get back to it?

So today, I am deciding that I am going to focus on getting back to routine. What that might look like is unclear but I am going to dedicate some time to making a routine for my life that I can stick to. I am sure that it is going to be hard and that I am going to have days where I miss the routine but I am going to keep trying.

Wellness Wednesday: How well are you taking care of yourself

Here we are for another Wellness Wednesday posting and I am back to self-care. Why would I be back on this topic? Simple it is incredible important and something that is often overlooked or ignored. So it is time to look back at the last couple weeks and ask yourself a few questions.

  1. Am I getting enough sleep?
  2. Am I eating with good nutrition?
  3. Am I eating a lot of junk?
  4. What is my current stress level?
  5. Am I exercising?
  6. Am I happy?

This week the post is not a long one, but when you answer these questions be honest with yourself. If you find yourself not where you want to be what can you change to help move you in the right direction? I know that my exercise routine had been a mess and I had not been doing what I know I needed to do so I decided to work on that. This week I am focusing on getting more runs in and training for my upcoming half marathon. I will probably not get in all the miles that my training app wants me to this week but I am going to try and get miles in everyday so that I can get closer to where I want to be.  Are you eating too much junk? Look at the circumstances around it and make the changes you need to fix that. These will probably start with small steps but it will get better. So let me know what is working for you and lets chat about how to help each other become more aware of self-care and become better at it.

Wellness Wednesday: Habits

Have you ever decided to establish a new habit? We all have thought about habits we want to change or add to our lives. We tell ourselves that we are going to start a habit of going to the gym or of going to bed at a certain time. For me it was establishing a new self-care action of playing the guitar daily. While this may seem silly to some but I decided that it was important to me. For me I made a SMART goal about how this was going to happen. I made it my plan to spend a minimum of 15 minutes a day playing my guitar everyday. What would you like to establish as a new habit? Is there something that you want to see changed? Are you wanting to establish an exercise habit? Are you wanting to establish a habit regarding your sleep routine?  Once you find out what you want to change, make that decision and stick to it. However, establishing a new habit is hard right? Sometimes you make a mistake and you feel like a failure. Just because you missed a day in the process does not mean that you have to start over but you do have to keep working on it.

I have other things that I would like to establish as a habit but another key thing in establishing habits is that you should not have so many things you are trying to change at once. So as you begin to think about what habit you want to establish, remember to be patient with yourself. Let me know how your process is going! Wellness Wednesday: Self-Care

So here we are back for another Wellness Wednesday. This week the topic is on self-care and how to manage stress. If you work in the field of mental health self-care is a phrase that we use all the time. However, self-care is important in every aspect of your life. If we do not use self-care we are likely to burn out on whatever we are doing. We also are going to have poor overall health. What does self-care mean? How do we use self-care?

Self-care is the ability to take care of yourself and ensure that your needs are being met. What do you do to take care of yourself? Are you doing anything for yourself? Are you feeling stressed? Are you feeling drained? Do you not care about things that you used to?

If you are looking at those questions and thinking I feel stressed and drained. Maybe it is time to look at what you are doing for yourself. What are some ways to improve your self care? Well here are just a few suggestions.

  1. Get enough sleep. Last week we talked about sleep and how to improve your sleep but really sleep is important and is key in self-care. Without sleep you are not able to function and you are draining yourself physically and emotionally.
  2. Eat healthy, without proper fuel your body is going to fail. If you make sure to eat regularly (you know meals and snacks in a routine) you will find that you feel better. We have termed the phrase “hangry” when people get so hungry and angry because they are hungry.
  3. Exercise regularly. We have all heard that experts recommend working out or exercising 3 times a week for 30 minutes.
  4. Do something you love! Find something you love and do it. Make it a priority to something that you love for yourself. Do you play an instrument, write, draw, dance, volunteer…. Find something that you love to  do and do!

Those are just a few things to help you on your way to better self-care. I am sure that there will be another post on self-care soon. Let’s talk about how your are doing with this and what you are doing that you love.

Wellness Wednesday Water Round 2

Hello again,

Last week we talked about how important it is to add more water into our daily routines and I have had some great comments about how people are working to add water into they routine. So I thought this week we would once again talk about our friend water. There are many many health benefits to drinking the right amount of water. Its not just doom and gloom if you don’t drink enough water but there are positive rewards for drinking more water.

First benefit comes for those (like myself) that sometimes eat because you are bored. Sometimes I drink water in large amounts when I am driving long distances (for those that know me that means everyday). I drink water because it gives me something to do while driving or stuck in traffic besides eating snacks. The benefit is I eat less food that is not as good for me. Thats right I eat less bad calories! Are you trying to lose weight and having a hard time with snacking in the car? Drink water, or give yourself a challenge that you can’t eat any snacks until you drink a bottle of water. Help yourself train to drink more water and eat less bad.

Second benefit comes with your skin, when you don’t drink enough water your skin can look old. What I mean by this is dry and more wrinkled. When you drink enough water your skin has what it needs to stay hydrated. Not that drinking water will get rid of wrinkles but it might stop you from getting them premature.

Third and final benefit today is that drinking water helps your body get rid of toxins and waste from your kidneys. People often lose weight when they first start this because their body actually starts to get rid of the stuff that has been there that was not moving. Getting rid of toxins and waste will also help you feel better and more energetic.

This is just a short list of positives that come with drinking water. Will you get enough water in this week? What are you doing to increase your water?

Marathon

Today was the day! I registered for my first marathon. I am running in the LA Marathon March 2015. Now I just have to train for the marathon. I am excited and nervous. This is yet another running goal that I am reaching for and will be able to cross of my list but then the doubt comes in. What if I can’t finish it? What if I am running too slow and do not finish in the required time.

I know as novice runners (which I consider myself) there are a million different training programs that we are told about and everyone is going to give their two cents on what you need to do to finish the marathon and what to do after the marathon. I know I am going to keep my normal training with teh exception that I am going to add one more day of running with more distance added and hopefully get better times so that as the event gets closer I will not stress out as much.
